Maggi Kelly

My CV can be found here, my Google Scholar page is here and my Research Gate page is here. I am at long last getting into the twitter game: @nmaggikelly

Background: I am Professor and Cooperative Extension Specialist in the Environmental Science, Policy and Management department at UC Berkeley. I study the drivers, patterns and consequences of environmental change across California’s spatially complex, socially diverse and dynamic landscapes using integrated geospatial tools. My work using GIS, remote sensing, historical data archives, web infrastructure, and participatory technologies enables interdisciplinary collaboration, data-rich and analysis-intensive geospatial research, and active outreach across a number of academic domains with significant societal impact.

I am very conscious of the speed at which our geospatial field is evolving, making the need to capture information from, and share information with broad scientific, regulatory, and public communities increasingly important. To that end I seek to build a community interested in applied geospatial research and outreach locally at UC Berkeley and across the state. I am faculty director of the Geospatial Innovation Facility and Director of the ANR Statewide Program in Informatics and Geographic Information Systems (IGIS), both of which are dedicated to bringing cutting-edge mapping technology to the ANR network, students, staff, faculty, and the public. The GIF/IGIS host workshops, conferences, and geolunches. Come visit us on the web or in person in Mulford Hall.

Leadership Roles:

  • Faculty Director of the Geospatial Innovation Facility;
  • Director, ANR Statewide Program in Informatics and Geographic Information Systems (IGIS);
  • Senior Fellow at the Berkeley Institute for Data Sciences (BIDS)

My road back to Berkeley: I grew up in Berkeley, went to the great BHS, and went to Cal for a B.A. in geography (with a year abroad at the University of Wales in Aberystwyth). Since mapping was not big at Cal then, I got a certificate in Cartography from Cal State Hayward (at which time I was also an intern at the National Mapping Division of the USGS in Menlo Park). With my love of all things GIS revealed, I left the state to get a M.A. in geography from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Colorado in Boulder. After grad school I was a National Research Council postdoc at the National Marine Fisheries Service lab in Beaufort NC. After a short visit as a lecturer in the geography department at San Diego State University I came back to the city by the bay and joined ESPM in 1999.

Awards: In the summer of 2008 I was awarded an "Excellence in Education" award from the California Geographic Information Association for my geospatial outreach and training program work. I will also shamelessly promote the fact that I have been inducted into three halls of fame for my water polo past: the US Water Polo Hall of Fame (2004), the UC Berkeley Athletic Hall of Fame (2007), and the Berkeley High Athletic Hall of Fame (2008). I now get my water polo fix through watching the Cal Women's Water Polo Team, and dabbling in Master's play with my ladies of Oakland Water Polo. Recently I have become very excited about distance swimming, although only in warm Hawaiian waters, with lots of friends and fishes.
