There is an article in the WashPost article today, spurred by the MODIS images of the southern California fires. It is interesting to see these MODIS images used so widely for what I think is the first time. The reporter gives his own take on an overview from the first satellites to Google Earth, and ends by saying that these technologies have allowed us to develop a "sense of the Earth as a whole." Not sure I agree, but an interesting take.
An interactive map of the wildfires and an update of the status of the firefighting efforts from the New York Times. Check it out.
Fire Information for Resource Management (FIRMS) at the University of Maryland is now offering KML to view MODIS Hotspot detections for the past 24 hours using Google Earth. Check out the Southern California fires that blew up this weekend. FIRMS KML link. Cheers, Josh
Spotted Owl in the news. I noticed this on the front page of the NYTimes webpage. (SNAMP)
I am not sure why the last post came out empty...very strange. This article is great "In Niger, trees and crops turn back to desert" NY Times: 2/11/07 This community planted trees to combat desertification and have shown success... It has a nice figure showing (reforestation) land use and land cover change using aerial photographs and a cool video! http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/11/world/africa/11niger.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
