Data and more data

Perhaps you already know about this site, but ... just in case: http://glcf.umiacs.umd.edu/index.shtml . They have 13 Terabytes of available data, so it’s likely you can find something interesting. Landsat, Modis and Aster imagery and products, with different search methods.

The GLCF site is very impressive, but it may not be the most complete or up-to-date for particular regions (especially in the U.S.). For the Montana region that I just left, we have very current TM, MODIS, SRTM, etc. available from the website. (I like the DNGP interface better than the GLCF too, although it's slower).
Montana also just joined the AmericaView consortium (http://remotesensing.montana.edu/MontanaView/), which has a mission that overlaps that of the sites mentioned above.
I'm new to California so I don't yet know whether there's anything similar down here. But I think this is an important and ongoing issue for facilities like the GIIF--to what extent do we "point to" datasets like these, and to what extent do we archive our own copies.
I'm looking forward to discussing this and other topics with all of you in person and online--it's an exciting time to be a GIS geek. I'll post more of an introduction to myself later on, but in case you're wondering, I'm Eric Edlund, the new coordinator/facilitator/manager/title to be determined(?) of the GIIF. It's great to be here.
