Fire Terrorism

It's back: discussion about the use of arson and catastrophic fire by terrorists. The Fire Center have been talking about this; and I think this kind of worry was what helped us get homeland security money for fire research and outreach in pre-Katrina times.

Do you think it is ethical to exploit the worry and fear for funding? Would be ethical to add to the worry and fear in order to increase the size of the funding pool? I know it's the game you gotta play, but I don't like where it's going.

BTW, your blog feed's timestamps are off. No account for the time change, I think.

Your point is right on. I think that is the problem with some disaster-related funding: it can be very changeable and unstable, depending on which way the wind is blowing. So if you happen to submit requests for research support from federal granting agencies for fire research (and outreach) in times of Katrina, you might not have success. It seems that fire and global warming are sounding louder alarm bells now. I think disaster awareness with the public and with some funding agencies is cyclical.
