Measuring Your Food Environment

This site is related to the work Ellen and I are working on with Barbara Laraia and Irene Yen at UCSF. We are mapping the food environment for a study collaborating with Kaiser examining obesity and diabetes rates.  This is a new-ish field, with lots of new and exciting methods being developed to map access to "good" and "bad" food.  The National Cancer Institute has developed a site that collects many of these approaches.

Mapping the food environment is of great interest to those of us doing translational research in the obesity field. As we conduct focus group research, the obstacle of access to healthy foods, is presented again and again. Including mapping of areas for physical activity, schools and work centers and sharing this info with city planning departments will go a long way in addressing obesity rates in communities. Thanks for your work in this field!
