Mitigation-related changes in vernal pool edaphic settings

Wacker and Kelly. 2004. Wetlands Ecology and Management. We analyzed past mitigation practices in two rapidly growing counties in California’s Great Central Valley to determine if mitigation procedures are re-arranging the vernal pool landscape by substituting more common or less ecologically significant pool types (as defined by soil type and geomorphology) for rarer or ecologically richer pool types.

webGIS as a tool for sustainable natural resource management

Kearns et al. 2003. Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment. Whether tracking invasive species, assessing water quality, or monitoring the spread of disease, comprehensive data collection is a key component of sustainable natural resource management. Increasingly, fostering community-based monitoring is seen as a valuable way to augment data gathering and enhance public involvement in environmental management.

WebGIS for monitoring sudden oak death in California

Kelly and Tuxen. 2003. Computers, Environment and Urban Systems. This paper describes in detail how the oakmapper webGIS application was developed, implemented, and used, and discusses some of the common application problems associated with the project, as well as the larger societal issues of Internet access, quality control, and privacy.

Landscape dynamics of the spread of Sudden Oak Death

Kelly and Meentemeyer. 2002. Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing. We present a landscape-scale We present a landscape-scale study of the spatio-temporal dynamics of oak mortality using second-order spatial point-pattern analysis techniques and classification trees.

Seagrass landscape pattern and hydrodynamic setting

Fonseca, et al. 2002. Ecological Applications. We examined the coherence of predictions of seagrass cover and ecological attributes of temperate, mixed-species seagrass derived from two common sampling techniques, (video) line transect (commonly used by biologists) and grid-sampled surveys (often used in remote sensing).

Mapping seagrass bed pattern

Kelly, N. M., M. Fonseca, and P. Whitfield. 2001. Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems. An empirically derived logistic multiple regression model and a Boolean logic suitability model were used to produce several predictive map products, including: susceptibility of seagrasses to storms, probability of seagrass cover, and suitability of areas for restoration of seagrassesin Core Sound, North Carolina, USA.

Changes to the landscape pattern of coastal NC wetlands under the Clean Water Act

Kelly, 2001. Landscape Ecology. A collection of Section 404 permits from 1984 through 1992 was analyzed in conjunction with classified Landsat Thematic Mapper data from 1984 and 1992 in order to quantify changes to wetland habitat in the study area in coastal North Carolina.

Spatial accuracy assessment of wetland permits

Kelly, 2000. Cartography and Geographic Information Systems. A collection of permits granted for alterations to coastal wetlands in North Carolina from 1984 through 1992 was examined to determine the spatial accuracy of the data.
