Rural electrification in developing countries is often hampered by major information gaps between local communities and urban centers, where technical expertise and fund- ing are concentrated. The tool presented in this paper addresses these gaps to support the implementation of off-grid micro hydropower infrastructure. Specifically, we present a method to site, size and evaluate the potential for micro hydropower based on re- mote sensing data. The method improves on previous approaches by (i) incorporating the effect of hillslope topography on the optimal layout of the infrastructure, and (ii) accounting for the constraints imposed by streamflow variability and local electricity demand on the optimal size of the plants. An assessment of the method’s performance against 148 existing schemes indicates that it correctly identifies the most promising locations for hydropower in Nepal, but does not generally reproduce the specific design features of constructed plants, which are affected by site-specific constraints. We develop a proof-of-concept computer tool to explore the potential of webGIS technology to account for these constraints by collecting site-specitic information from local users. Journal link

Watershed land use and wetland disturbance

Watershed-scale land use and salmon habitat

Opperman, et al. 2005. Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Science. Relationships between land use or land cover and embeddedness, a measure of fine sediment in spawning gravels, were examined at multiple scales across 54 streams in the Russian River Basin, California. The results suggest that coarse-scale measures of watershed land use can explain a large proportion of the variability in embeddedness and that the explanatory power of this relationship increases with watershed size.

Landscape metrics in freshwater research and management

A portion of the study area around San Jose, CAWe quantified landscape composition and configuration for subwatershed areas upstream of individual sampling sites, reducing the number of metrics based on: (1) sensitivity to changes in extent and (2) redundancy, as determined by a multivariate factor analysis.

Decadal changes in a Pacific estuary

Byrd et al. 2005. GIScience and Remote Sensing. We used historic aerial photographs with manual and automated image classification techniques to discern decadal-scale changes to salt marshes in Elkhorn Slough, California caused by off-farm sedimentation from 1971 to 2001. Change detection identified a process of plant succession that led to arroyo willow encroachment into pickleweed marsh.
